Musings from Exhibition One in Liverpool – the world’s first Accelerator City

Kambe was invited to attend the historic Exhibition One conference in Liverpool at which the city was named the world’s first ‘Accelerator City’ for climate action by the UN Climate Change’s Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action programme.

Liverpool’s incredible innovation and regulation to rapidly decarbonise the live music and film production industries won them this epic accolade. The city has always been hot on climate action since becoming the first combined authority to declare a climate emergency in 2019, and committing to net zero carbon by 2040 – a decade ahead of the national target.

We joined a few hundred industry folk from music and film on the Mersey docks. Nature presenter and activist Chris Packham and Radio One’s Swarzy gave a heartfelt, inspiring welcome shortly before we were bathed in sound and film by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for a mellifluous call-to-action – and the European Space Agency brought amazing, interactive climate-focused gadgets and art installations.

We joined a collaborative talk on Scope 3 travel emissions, which brought together event organisers, promoters and transport operators in one room for the first time – with exciting results. We investigated cutting-edge, large-scale event sustainability culminating in the impressive, world-leading Massive Attack x Act 1.5 and Tyndall Centre case study which saw an illuminating show run largely on renewable grid power with delicious vegan food served.

The day was gloriously inspiring, and deeply exciting.

It was a privilege to be at the forefront of alignment on global sustainable event management – a journey we’ve been leading on for decades.
